Tummy tuck surgery procedure definition
Abdominal plastic surgery offers a solution by flattening the slack skin and tightening the muscles of the relaxed tummy wall, which frequently occurs after pregnancy or a distinct weight loss. If needed, excess subcutaneous fatty tissue can be removed as well. The appearance and functional results of the Tummy tuck surgery are substantial, although scars are inevitable in order to remove excessive skin. It leaves a permanent scar. However, it will fade with time and its quality differs per individual. Tummy tuck is not only an aesthetic surgery but it provides a solution to functional deficiencies of the abdominal wall, i.e. inferior rectus muscle diastases.
The Tummy tuck surgery not only brings about a better appearance and function, but it also stops the slackening process of the abdominal wall.
A good state of health is a natural prerequisite. This surgery is not recommended when pregnancy is planned. Tummy tuck surgery procedure can be performed on men to a degree, if the skin slack is more marked.
Tummy tuck surgery - preoperative instructions & the operation
- A consultation with a plastic surgeon is followed by a full and comprehensive medical examination, and then a date for the Tummy tuck surgery operation can be scheduled. If, after the first consultation, there are any concerns about the surgery, another consultation can be arranged.
- One month before the Tummy tuck surgery operation, do not use any medications containing acetylsalicyclic acid (such as Acylpyrin, Aspirin, Alnogon, Mironal, etc.). It can increase bleeding during and after Tummy tuck surgery.
- It is assumed that no acute illnesses occurred in the period of at least three weeks before the planned Tummy tuck operation (viral illness, cold, etc.). Report any and all illnesses to the clinic.
- Drink two to three litres of mineral water three days before the Tummy tuck operation, however, 6 hours before the operation do not drink, eat, or smoke.
- Have a good night's sleep the night before the Tummy tuck operation; you should be well rested before the operation. No alcohol may be consumed the night before the operation.
- Wash your hair the day before the operation and do not put any facial cream, milk or make-up on the day of the operation. Any jewellery, including earrings, should not be worn.
- We do not recommend that the patients leave the clinic unaccompanied and should arrange for transport to their onward destination.
The Tummy tuck surgery operation is performed under general anaesthesia. The incision and resulting scar runs closely above the pubic hair within the entire width between the hip bones. Consequently, the scar is situated where it is easily covered with underwear along its entire length. This approach will bring about the best general effects. In addition to removing excess skin slack, the Tummy tuck surgery also includes the transfer of the navel to a new position, reinforcement of the abdominal wall by suturing loose tummy muscles, and subcutaneous tissue removal if required.
Tummy tuck surgery - aftercare
Patients stay overnight in the clinic and usually stay for 2 to 3 days. The bandage should be changed one week after the Tummy tuck surgery operation. Rest is recommended for about 14 days after the Tummy tuck surgery and the patient may get back into a full workload after about 6 weeks of gradual recovery.
The sensation of skin pulling and altered tenderness in the affected areas are common side effects, and they will disappear in a couple of weeks.
Tummy tuck surgery - risks
When a Tummy tuck surgery is performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, complications are infrequent and usually minor. Still, individuals vary greatly in their anatomy, their physical reactions, and their healing abilities, and the outcome is never completely predictable. Complications that can occur after Tummy tuck surgery include hematoma (a collection of blood under the skin that must be removed by the surgeon), sensation disturbances (usually temporary), infection, uneven contour, pigmentation changes and reactions to the anesthesia. Poor healing of the skin is most likely to affect smokers. You can reduce your risks by closely following advices mentioned above both before and after surgery.
