Laparoscopic (lap) gastric band called:

BioEnterics® Intragastric Balloon (BIB®) System

laparoscopic gastric band 1

BIB® laparoscopic gastric band system is a revolutionary system devised for those suffering from obesity.

laparoscopic gastric band 1

BIB® laparoscopic gastric band is not suitable in the case of "morbid" obesity. BIB® laparoscopic gastric band (also called BIB® lap band) is basically a soft balloon, inserted into the stomach via a tube through the mouth.

Once in the stomach, a saline solution fills this small balloon thuss allowing it to float within the stomach.

A feeling of fullness occurs, leaving the patient with a suppressed appetite.

BIB® laparoscopic gastric band is designed for patients with light obesity

Benefits are:

  • no permanent damage
  • reversible
  • risk free surgery
  • only office based procedure

BIB® lap gastric band procedure

An initial consultation and examination will take place. If no irregularities are observed delaying or preventing progress, the doctor will apply some local anaesthetic. Then he will insert the tiny, deflated balloon down the oesophagus into the stomach. Once inside the stomach, the balloon will be filled with a saline solution via an attached catheter.

The catheter is then gently removed as the other end is still outside the mouth. The balloon has a self-sealing valve.

The whole procedure should take no more than half an hour.

Although a number of patients have returned home same the day. With this procedure, an overnight stay is reccommended due to post op nausea and vomitting which often occurs. However this can be controlled by administering medication which you are given an ample supply to take home with you. The patient must return around six months later, to have the balloon removed which can be done in one day.

BIB® lap gastric band FAQ

Who would benefit most from BIB® lap band?

This lap band system is specifically designed for those with weighing at least 40% above their ideal weight and whose previous dieting and life style has failed to achieve significant weight loss . It may be particularly relevant for those patients requiring surgery and whose obesity is preventing it taking place.

How long should does BIB® lap band last?

It is not recommended to be used longer than six months, as acids within the stomach will gradually weaken the material. Depending on the individual of course, it might be hoped that within that six month period, the effects of the balloon, along with dietary and lifestyle changes, will have had sufficient effect to render a further balloon to be inserted unecessary. If however, your doctor deems it necessary to continue, another balloon is inserted usnig the same simple procedure.

What happens if the BIB® balloon deflates?

If this should happen before the scheduled date, it is small enough that it will pass naturally through the body. In a small number of cases it may be necessary to remove it from the bowel surgically. If a deflation is suspected, you should always consult your doctor.

How is the BIB® balloon removed?

In much the same way it was inserted. After anaesthesia, a catheter is inserted into the stomach and the balloon deflated and removed.

How much weight will be lost?

This is not a 'stand alone' diet system. In fact, there is no such thing! It must be used in conjunction with a change of diet, exercsie regime and many other factors that you must discuss and monitor with your doctor.

Will the weight stay off?

The answer is much the same as for the question of how much weight will be lost. When the balloon is inserted it is a fantastic aid to achieving weight loss. It must be stressed that it is aid though not a panacea. The feeling of being full can be such a boost to eating less but needs to be combined with the programme set out by your doctor and by indeed your own efforts. Once your new lifestyle is established, it needs to be maintained.

What are the BIB® lap band (BIB® lap band) side effects?

There is a likelihood that you will feel 'sickly' and vomitting is possible for the first few days. Your doctor can prescribe something to help this.

There is the possibilty that weight loss can cause other physical problems, that you should consult your doctor about if they give concern.

NOTE

Our surgeons are also able to perform the "outside" laparoscopic band (AGB - Adjustable Gastric Band) but do not offer the procedure to foreign patients for the following reason: There can be scarring and risks of permanent problems. Often patients have to be transferred to an intensive care department, often for days, or sometimes even weeks. Patients also require follow ups every week or two for quite some time.
