Breast enlargement surgery procedure definition
What is breast enlargement? This procedure is designed to increase breast size and or/volume. Candidates are mainly those who simply have what is perceived as underdeveloped breasts. Other patients are made up of women wishing to restore lost breast volume following child birth, weight fluctuation, hormonal changes etc. Sadly nowadays we see an increasing number of enquirers from girls with normal size breasts feeling inadequate, due to media circus hype of oversized breast offering a passport to being famous! In these cases our surgeon will refuse to operate.
The breast implant is usually -(see below) inserted via a very small incision sited in the centre and at the base of the breast where there is a natural fold. Generally within 3 months the incision mark/scar totally disappears. Therefore it can generally be assumed barring post op complication such as very poor healing, or failure to follow post op instructions, the procedure should leave no long term visible scar indications.
Enlargement of the breasts by means of implants, is a very effective surgery, suitable for women with insufficiently developed breasts or when the mammary gland system is shedding and the skin is slightly loose, as may be the case after breast feeding or significant weight loss.
The optimal age limit for breast enlargement surgery varies. It is generally done after the development of the mammary glands is completed, which is not before the age of eighteen. Regarding pregnancy, it is recommended that breast enlargement surgery only be preformed when the woman does not plan any pregnancies because pregnancy and breast-feeding result in changes of volume, producing a negative effect on the results of the breast enlargement surgery. The breast implants do not influence the pregnancy in any way and they will not expose the fetus to any danger. However, there is the risk that the patient will be unable to breast-feed normally due to insufficient lactation. It should be noted that a number of patients were able to breast-feed normally after a breast enlargement.
Breast enlargement via armpit incision.
Some 15 years ago this technique was hailed as a breakthrough in breast enlargement surgery. Unfortunately this procedure proved to have unexpected complications (post op infection) and was by and large abandoned. As the incision was made directly into a sweat gland (armpit) the percentage of post op infections, was extremely high. Worldwide there are still a number of clinics who offer this option. It sounds appealing, as most people are naturally concerned about visible scarring despite the fact normally there is none, see paragraph 2. However frankly from information we have gained from various plastic surgeons, the procedure these days is perceived as nothing more than a marketing gimmick. PR and media love this type of thing!! Infections along the way..so what!!!
Any issues related to the size and shape of the breasts needs to be addressed and all motives or psychological reasons need to be addressed. Each breast enlargement is unique to the individual and the surgeon's individual approach towards the patient corresponds accordingly. A state of good health is a natural prerequisite. In most cases, implants are placed under the mammary gland. With particularly small breasts, when the gland has not actually developed, it is more appropriate to place the implant deeper, under the pectoralis major muscle.
In our clinic, we use silicon implants by McGHAN and by EUROSILICONE that are believed to be the best products of this type available in the world. We offer only the best breast enlargement procedures at all. At the present time, two basics implants are available, spherical breast englarments and anatomical breast englarments, which are available in a full range of shapes and volumes. The implants may be inserted using three different techniques. The incision can be made in the axilla, around the aerola, or under the breast. This is subject to the type of implant used and the size of the mammary gland.
About the Procedure
lasts approximately 1-2 hours depending whether the implants are placed over or under the muscle. Many enquirers are under the impression implants should always be placed under the muscle. This is not the case and entirely depends on the patients anatomy. If the patients is tiny, and somewhat diminutive with thin non fleshy skin, an under the muscle implant would be deemed appropriate. Using over the muscle implants could become visible. Placing the implant under the muscle take 100% longer to perform and is quite painful for a few days post op. The over muscle method is virtually painless, this is borne out by our former patients.
Therefore if the implants will not show through, there is no need to endure a longer anaesthetic than necessary or indeed, a quite painful recovery period. Interestingly the under muscle procedure could NOT be performed using the under arm incision method.
Type of implants
Essentially there are two types, round or anatomical. Anatomical are often termed "teardrop" shape. Many enquirers are wrongfully under the impression the teardrop is superior..it isn't!! The two types give the surgeon a different option to work with depending on the patients frame structure. In many cases the anatomical are totally unsuitable. Breast implants are not fashion items where the choice is totally down to the patients "I want" stance. A good surgeons advice is important.
History of the procedure.
The technique has been widely used since the 1960's. However the first recorded implant surgery was performed in the Czech Republic (where we take you) around 1915. The technique involved fat transfer from the buttocks and although not long lasting, it did work!!
Breast enlargement surgery - preoperative instructions & the operation
- A consultation with a plastic surgeon is followed by a full and comprehensive medical examination, and then a date for the breast enlargement operation can be scheduled. If, after the first consultation, there are any concerns about the surgery, another consultation can be arranged.
- One month before the breast enlargement operation, do not use any medications containing acetylsalicyclic acid (such as Acylpyrin, Aspirin, Alnogon, Mironal, etc.). It can increase bleeding during and after surgery.
- It is assumed that no acute illnesses occurred in the period of at least three weeks before the planned operation (viral illness, cold, etc.). Report any and all illnesses to the clinic.
- Drink two to three litres of mineral water three days before the operation, however, 6 hours before the operation do not drink, eat, or smoke.
- Have a good night's sleep the night before the breast enlargement operation; you should be well rested before the operation. No alcohol may be consumed the night before the operation.
- Wash your hair the day before the operation and do not put any facial cream, milk or make-up on the day of the operation. Any jewellery, including earrings, should not be worn.
- We do not recommend that the patients leave the clinic unaccompanied and should arrange for transport to their onward destination.
Before the operation, drawings are made on the breast with the patient standing. The operation is performed under general anesthesia. Applying an elastic bandage to secure the implants into the desired position completes the operation.
-->Breast enlargement - aftercare
Patients stay overnight in the clinic and are usually released from the clinic the following morning. Before the patient leaves, the bandages are changed and the drains are removed. Rest is recommended for several days and the patient should avoid physical strain. The sutures are removed on the 5 to 7th days after surgery. At this time, the patient will be instructed on how to massage the breasts to prevent the formation of a fibrous capsule around the implants and to assist in the formation of the natural shape of the breast. The patient may resume routine activities after 7 to 10 days. One to two months after surgery, the breasts are considered to be stable. After a six-month period, regular check-ups at a mammary clinic are recommended.
Breast enlargement surgery - risks
When a breast enlargement surgery is performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, complications are infrequent and usually minor. Still, individuals vary greatly in their anatomy, their physical reactions, and their healing abilities, and the outcome is never completely predictable. Complications that can occur include hematoma (a collection of blood under the skin that must be removed by the surgeon),sensation disturbances (usually temporary), infection, uneven contour, pigmentation changes and reactions to the anesthesia. Poor healing of the skin is most likely to affect smokers. You can reduce your risks by closely following advices mentioned above both before and after breast enlargement surgery.
